How to Restart and Refresh in 5 steps

We all know that dreaded feeling. Where you feel tired and drained and whatever it is that you are doing now is not helping out at all. You feel as if you're stuck and you just want something to change.

While I always think it's important to make sure that you see things through, sometimes it's better to know when to call it quits, to change and discuss your current circumstances making sure you are getting the most out of your life.

Starting new is a hard process. It involves a lot of self-evaluation and determining what you truly want out of your life. There are some simple steps that you can take to make sure that you move in the right direction.

1. Make a list of things that are important to you

It's essential that whatever you decide to do will make you happy in the end. This might sound like a moot point but actually writing this out and provide some clarity. Ensuring that you always keep things that are important to you as close as possible will help you in improving your happiness and motivation to achieve your goals.

List making

Once you have created this list you have to evaluate what you believe is beneficial in your life and what truly makes you happy or brings you satisfaction or success in your way. These are the areas you should focus on and invest your time into.

You'll also need to identify what areas of your life, or activities that aren't bringing you happiness and either reduce the time that your spending in these areas or cut them out completely.

2. Find areas of strength and weakness

This is much easier said than done. Identifying your strengths and weaknesses are possibly the hardest part of self-evaluation. Don't be afraid to simply ask people what they think of you - and tell them to be honest, otherwise you won't be able to work out what makes you, you and how to improve.

Strengths and weaknesses

Work on the areas that you find you need to improve upon and try your best to stick to a routine to improve the goal. This might mean slotting it into a your schedule, or even more simply a daily routine that you can integrate into your workflow. For example, if one of your weaknesses is that you stress to a high degree, integrating a quick morning meditation session as soon as you wake up can really help you destress throughout the working week.

3. Setting Goals to Keep up Motivation

The root of a lot of motivational problems, I've found, is where many people have either no sense of where they are going or feel as if they are just doing what needs to be done. This can be improved by setting goals for yourself.

Working towards a set goal helps keep your motivation and inspiration going. While you'll always hear people saying 'It's not about the goal, it's about the journey', goals can help you make sure the journey is completed and provide the most enjoyment for yourself.

Goal setting

Setting a goal can really help keep perspective on why you may be engaging in a certain activity. Our brains are wired to the rewards process, that is, we like to be rewarded for our work. This is why setting short term goals and completing them one by one, rather than having one long-term goal can help in this process.

4. Start a new project

Trying something new can always set off a spark and improve those feelings of stagnation and boredom in your life. New projects are a mix of trying new things but keeping a long-term view at hand.

Learning something new is a good place to start. This can be a new musical instrument or even a new language. There are heaps of apps out there now that can provide you with quick and easy ways to begin learning a new language. My favourite app for that at the moment is Duolingo which is completely free.

5. Get a whole new look

The way that you dress and present yourself to the world can really affect the way you behave and consequently think. This is why fashion is such an important part of our society - because it is more than just what you put on your back but extends to how people perceive you and how your personality may form.

Getting a whole new look can greatly boost your confidence or even just reboot and energise yourself over the short-term. Even small changes, such as a change of accessory, or switching up of colours in your wardrobe can really go towards improving your happiness and changing the way you behave.
